Family of Derrick Groves hope he will turn himself in; he and one other remain on loose

We are now 10 days into the search for inmates who made a brazen breakout from the Orleans Parish Jail on May 16. Currently, two of 10 remain on the run, including Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey.

Three other escaped inmates were caught Monday night.

As we get into yet another week, we are hearing from one of the families of the escapees for the first time on camera. Jasmine Groves, the aunt of Derrick Groves, said she wants her nephew to turn himself in, but she hopes he will be taken into custody alive. She is hoping that deadly force is not used by law enforcement.

Groves said that since her nephew escaped jail, she has noticed police cars and helicopters around her home and other family members’ homes.

She said last week, Groves’ mom was taken from her home against her will by law enforcement officials. She expressed concern over no one leaving a notice that she’d been taken.

U.S. Marshals confirmed to WDSU that they did go to Groves’ mother’s home to question her. Louisiana State Police apparently also went to the home and took the mother to their office for questioning. We did reach out to state police to ask if this is normal protocol.

Groves’ grandmother is Kim Groves. She was shot and killed in 1994, after corrupt NOPD Officer Len Davis ordered a hit on the mother of three.

Recently, Davis’ sentence has been commuted to a life sentence.
