A Jefferson Parish deputy shot a 62-year-old Lafitte woman in Marrero Wednesday afternoon, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. She has been identified as 62-year-old Paige Robin.
JPSO officials confirmed to WDSU, Robin is now in stable condition. She is facing charges of four counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer.
The shooting was reported in the 7300 block of the Westbank Expressway around 2:30 p.m.
According to JPSO, the truck the woman was driving was called in as a suspicious vehicle.
WDSU obtained a video showing the moment the shooting happened. It shows Robin exiting the truck with her hands in the air. The video then shows her walking toward the back of the truck when she again pointed what appeared to be a gun at a nearby deputy.
After an investigation, deputies say she was holding an air pistol that was modified to look like a real firearm.
The video shows gunfire erupt. At this point, WDSU pauses the video due to the nature of the shooting.
“Two deputies both fired multiple times, I don’t have an exact round count. Again, we’re waiting until we can process this a little easier,” said JPSO’s spokesperson Jason Rivarde.
Ashton Chatelain was just yards away from the incident, recording the standoff on her cell phone, watching as the shooting unfolded and called it a terrifying situation.
“We shop at that Dollar General every once in a while, and I’m not sure what caused the incident, but having something like that happen so close to home is definitely scary,” said Chatelain.
The video shows deputies rush to the woman’s side after the shooting, handcuffing her while trying to render aid.
“They used a tourniquet. They did what they could. They called EMS, EMS took her to a hospital,” said Rivarde.
The community is reacting to this investigation.
“The cops did their job, and I hope whoever that person is get the kind of help that they need, and I hope that doesn’t happen again,” said Chatelain.
According to JPSO, the woman was struck multiple times, and she was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
JPSO said the incident was captured on body camera video as well as the store’s surveillance footage.
Anyone with information or additional video of the shooting is asked to call 504-364-5300.
