A former Grand Isle councilman and former cop has been convicted of molesting two minors on the barrier island almost four decades ago.

Elgene Gary Sr., 81, was found guilty Thursday night by a Jefferson Parish jury.

Gary is a former elected member of the Grand Isle Town Council, a former member of the police department, and a former member of the Grand Isle Port Commission.

Two of the sexual battery charges involve the same victim, one for before she was 13 years of age and one after her 13th birthday.

The victim reported the abuse to law enforcement only after she had to leave Grand Isle due to Hurricane Ida.

She reported the incident in Baton Rouge to the Louisiana State Police, and an investigation was opened in October 2021.

The victim disclosed that Gary molested her since she was 7 years old and continued until she was 15.

The investigation also led police to a 40-year-old woman who stated Gary molested her between the ages of 7 and 10 in 1988 and 1991.

The jury deliberated for five hours, and he was found guilty of three counts of sexual battery.

Gary is scheduled to be sentenced June 16.
