How Are Hurricane Names Selected?
The WMO maintains six rotating lists of names for Atlantic tropical cyclones, reused every six years. Names are chosen based on:
- Simplicity and Clarity: Easily recognizable and pronounceable in multiple languages prevalent in the region.
- Cultural Considerations: Avoidance of names that might be culturally insensitive or have negative connotations.
- Alternating Gender: The lists alternate between male and female names to promote diversity.
If a storm is particularly deadly or costly, its name is retired from the list to prevent future confusion and sensitivity concerns.
What Happens If All Names Are Used?
In the rare event that all 21 names are exhausted in a single season, the WMO will use a supplemental list of names. This replaced the previous method of using the Greek alphabet, which was discontinued due to confusion and communication challenges during the record-breaking 2020 season.
