A New Orleans-style jazz funeral will honor 19 African American individuals whose remains were returned to New Orleans after being sent to Leipzig, Germany, for racial pseudoscience more than 150 years ago. The memorial service offers long-overdue recognition and remembrance through music and cultural celebration.
The ceremony features performances by the Black Men of Labor and Kumbuka Dancers. A jazz funeral procession will begin at Dillard University and travel through Congo Square to the Katrina Memorial, where the remains will later be privately interred.
This event represents a collective effort by the city of New Orleans, Dillard University, University Medical Center, and various community and academic partners.
Viewing starts at 9 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. at Lawless Memorial Chapel, Dillard University, 2601 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70122. The event will be streamed online at https://vimeo.com/event/5154230 on May 31, 2025.
